Six Easy Steps For Choosing An Air Purifier
Six Easy Steps For Choosing An Air Purifier
An air purifier can be very useful to improve the quality of your indoor air and make it more fit for breathing. Contrary to what people think, it is the
quality of your indoor air, and not so much outdoor air, which is responsible for various health problems such as asthma, allergies, hay fever, etc. All
these can be taken care of with a proper air purification system for your home. But how do you choose one? Well, here are the factors to consider when
choosing an air purifier.
Criteria For Choosing Air Purifiers
1) Size of the area: The size of the room that you wish to purify is an important consideration when buying an air purifier. If you choose a purifier
that is too small, it will not effectively clean the indoor air, thus rendering itself useless. And if you choose one that is too big, you could be
wasting a lot of money on your power bill. Thus, before buying an air purifier, you should measure the area of the room (or whole house as the case may
be) and then buy an air cleaning system that has the ability to purify the area.
2) Your purification needs: Why do you need an air purifier? What do you wish to remove from your indoor air? These are two questions that need to be
answered before choosing an purifier. Let's tackle them one by one.
• Most people want to buy an air purifier so that they can enhance their health through cleaner air. They wish to get rid of niggling allergies and
other health problems caused by bad indoor air. If that is the case, you need an air purifier for your whole house so that you can benefit from purer air
throughout your home. You should also ensure that the materials used in the air purification system as well as the filters are not ones that you are
allergic to and to which you can have a negative reaction. However, if you wish to purify selected areas in your home, it is best to go in for a portable
or a room air purifier, which can be used wherever you need it most.
• And now to the second question...what do you wish to eliminate from indoor air? Do you want to get rid of animal dander, or harmful germs and bacteria,
or disease causing particulates, or offensive odors and gases? If your primary need is to remove harmful particulates, then a HEPA air purifier is your
best bet as it effectively eliminates particles as small as 0.03 microns. To effectively remove germs and bacteria, you can choose an air purifier with a
UV system as these kill bacteria most effectively. However, in order to make your air as clean as possible, it is best to choose an air purifier that has
multiple filtration systems and not just one.
3) The CADR Rating: Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) is a rating that tells you how effective an air purifier is in eliminating dust mites, pollen
particles, and smoke from your indoor air. A higher CADR rating means the device is more effective and quicker at removing these harmful substances than
one with a lower CADR. Thus, you should select an air purifier with the best CADR rating.
4) Number of air changes per hour: This indicates the number of times a particular air purifier purifies the entire air within a given area in one hour.
Obviously, the higher the air changes per hour, the more efficient the purifier is, in not only purifying the air, but also maintaining its purity by
ridding the air of its impurities and pathogens rapidly and consistently. Thus, you need to choose one with as high air changing/hour rate as possible.
5) Maintenance and cleaning: Many people do not pay much attention to ease of cleaning the purifier when buying it and then get frustrated later on with
having to put in a lot of effort into its maintenance. While choosing an air purifier, you need to be aware of how regularly it needs to be serviced and
cleaned. How long can the filters be used before they need to be replaced? How expensive are the filters? Once you have the answers to these questions,
you can choose one which is easiest to clean and also not very expensive to maintain.
6) Noise Level: Some air purifiers make so much noise that they can literally wake up the dead! And since you want an purifier to enhance your health, it
is not going to happen if you choose a noisy one and lose sleep over it. Thus, check out the noise level of the air cleaner before making your purchase.
By following the above steps, you are sure to pick the ideal air purifier for your needs.

Consider These Points When Choosing an Asthma Air Purifier
Consider These Points When Choosing an Asthma Air Purifier
Do you suffer from asthma? Then you well know the symptoms associated with this medical condition. Narrowing airways, gasping for air, shortness of breath, tight chest, puffing and coughing are all symptoms experienced by asthma sufferers. Cold air, air pollutants, exercise and emotional stress all seem related to bringing on asthma. In youngsters asthma attacks are often related to illnesses caused by viruses.
Asthma has become all too common a medical struggle for a growing number of the population. Recent documentation indicates asthma cases have increased by more than 100% over the past 20 years. Along with this emergency room visits related to asthma are also increasing at a brisk rate. Of even more concern is that statistics show that deaths related to asthma are also on the increase.
It is now recognized that the increasing poor quality of air is related to the increased numbers of asthma cases. Poor quality air is not only found in the environment, due to automobile and factory emissions, it is also noted that polluted air within the living spaces of individual homes is also a contributing factor.
Air within a home can be purified with air purifiers. There are a lot of air purifiers on the market which is growing very competitive.
These machines purify the air and some have been labeled as an asthma air purifier, although they are not necessarily exclusively for asthma sufferers. There are some factors to be considered when you are shopping for an air purifier. They include such things as noise level, appearance, and the type of filter used in filtering the pollutants.
Most people who are shopping for an asthma air purifier consider it's aesthetic appeal to be very important. Since asthma sufferers will benefit the most from the purifying effects of the asthma air purifier when it is operating on a constant basis, appearance is a factor. It will be very visible in your household as it is used continuously to draw in and capture pollutants and circulate clean air back into your home.
So even though the real role of the machine is to purify air it would be inappropriate for it to detract from the decor of your home. Thus a machine that looks great is almost as important as one that works great.
A second big concern in your selection of an asthma air purifier is the noise level created by the air purifier. Your waking hours will be less stressful if your air purifier has low noise level and your sleep will not be disturbed if the noise level is low. This makes the selection of an asthma air purifier with low operational noise levels that still does a good job of purifying air an important consideration.
Finally what types of filters are used? Another factor to consider before your purchase is that of filters. There are some air purifiers that do not use filters but if you choose one that uses filters it is best to get one that uses HEPA filters. HEPA filters are the most effective. They are required to filter out 99.97% of pollutants as one of the standards of the Department of Energy for HEPA filters. An asthma filter with this type of filter will do a great job of returning circulated air that is of the highest quality.

How Do Air Purifiers Work?
How Do Air Purifiers Work?
Although they may seem like a new innovation, air purifiers have been around for more than 200 years. Beginning as protective masks for fireman, air purifiers have now evolved the ability to protect you and your family from airborne pollutants.
As allergies and asthma now affect more than 50 million Americans, the concern for safe indoor air quality has rapidly increased. Now more than ever, Americans are looking for ways to improve their indoor air quality. Air purifiers lead the pack in advancements for cleaner air.
Allergens like smoke, mold spores, pollen, bacteria, viruses, pet dander, and other pollutants damage your lungs and immune system. Unfortunately, most of these irritants cannot be seen by the naked eye. Air purifiers filter allergens and pollutants seen or unseen by the human eye. To remove these objects, air purifiers typically use filters, electrical attraction, or ozone.
Air filters utilize fine sieves that filter particles from circulating air. As air flows into the air purifier, the finer the sieve used, the smaller the particles it traps. The accepted benchmark for air filters has been set by the High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters, which are guaranteed to trap 99.97% of airborne particles larger than 0.3 microns. Microns are the standard unit used for measuring air particles. Each micron is equivalent to 1/25,400 of an inch. The naked eye cannot see anything this small, so pollutants like bacteria and viruses escape detection. Room air conditioner filters only capture particles 10 microns or larger. HEPA filters remove smaller allergens like dust, smoke, chemicals, asbestos, pollen, and pet dander.
The more times the air passes through the HEPA filter, the cleaner the air becomes. The room capacity of a HEPA air purifier will determine whether the air cleaner can handle your air purifying needs. Top-of-the-line brands like Austin Air purifiers will provide approximately 15 air exchanges per hour in an average room and contain an average of 15 lbs of activated carbon/zeolite blends, which adsorb chemicals and odors.
In addition to the HEPA filter, brands like AllerAir and IQAir offer an optional medical grade ultra-violet (UV) light system, used to quickly kill viruses, bacteria, and fungi upon entry into the air purifier. UV light also protects the HEPA filter from biological and viral contamination.
Electrical attraction is another technology utilized by air purifiers to trap particles. Three types of air cleaners work using electrical attraction: electrostatic precipitating cleaners, electret filters, and negative ion generators.
Electrostatic precipitating cleaners, or electronic air purifiers, draw particles in by fan and charge them with a series of high-voltage wires. Several plates (precipitating cells) carry the opposite electrical charge and attract the contaminants as they pass by the plates. Electronic air purifiers are perfect for individuals who don't want to worry about the costly replacements of HEPA filters. Friedrich electrostatic air purifiers remove approximately 95% of all airborne particles and carry low energy costs for you.
Electret filters in air purifiers use synthetic fibers that create static charges to attract particles. Electret filters are offered in a variety of types including plain, pleated, disposable or reusable. Depending on the type of filter you need, will determine how often the filter requires replacement.
Some brands like Blueair combine the HEPA technology with their own electrostatic media filter technology, which charges the incoming particles instead of the filter. By marrying the two unique purification systems together, Blueair created a more effective air cleaner.
Negative ion generators or ionic air purifiers use tiny, charged wires or needles to create gas molecules with negative charges or ions that adhere to the airborne particles and collect in the filter. However, many ions end up back in the air, sticking to furnishings and other surfaces that may be stained by them.
Ionic air purifiers only remove certain types of particles and aren't always effective against gases, chemicals, or odors. Some ionic air purifiers have been shown to re-circulate the same dirty particles that they draw in, making them much less effective than traditional air purifiers using HEPA filtration.
Instead of using filters to trap particles, ozone generators use high voltage electrical currents to convert oxygen to ozone, which acts as a powerful oxidant and breaks down molecules and microorganisms in the air. Several tests have proved that ozone generators are not very effective at removing indoor allergens.
Ozone, in fact, can be hazardous to your health, and both ozone generators and ionic air cleaners emit ozone. In nature, lightning creates ozone when it cuts through oxygen molecules in the air. In the atmosphere, ozone helps protect us from harmful UV rays; however, on the ground level, ozone is a powerful lung irritant. When created artificially, ozone can actually aggravate allergies and asthma, damaging the lining of nasal passages and lungs, causing coughing, throat irritation, chest pain, and shortness of breath. The Environmental Protection Agency and the American Lung Association advise against using ozone generators.
Asbestos and radon are growing problems in homes today. Heating devices produce carbon monoxide and other dangerous gases, and chemicals like formaldehyde and ammonia are increasing in the home environment. Since most Americans stay indoors an average of 90% of the time, providing fresher and cleaner air has never been more important.
Finding an environment-friendly solution has become much easier. Learn about air purification today. The right air purifier will provide asthma and allergy sufferers with air free of airborne pollutants and establish healthy indoor air quality for you and your family.

Air Purifiers Demystified
Air Purifiers Demystified
1. What are the main benefits that come with an air purifier?
Air purifiers benefit your health by removing or reducing the occurrence of harmful particles in the air. There are a variety of air purification technologies available at Air & Water to reduce odors, reduce particulates in the air, and to destroy living micro-organisms that float through the air you breathe.
2. What can an ionic purifier do for me?
Ionic purifiers contain a device that "ionizes" the air passing through it, causing the particles contained to gain a charge (either positive or negative, depending on the machine). After the air has been charged, one of two things can happen: the particles in the air can be attracted to an oppositely charged plate in the purification process or the particles can be attracted to other particles that have received an opposing charge resulting in the two particles sticking together and falling out of the air. Purifiers that release ions into the air have a much larger effectual range than those that do not because the air does not need to pass through the machine to start the purifying; air only needs to come into contact with the charged ions that are released. Capture-type ionic purifiers only need to be cleaned by wiping the dirt from the plates while ion-releasing purifiers require minimum maintenance. The particles are removed when you vacuum. Also, most ionizers are extremely quiet.
3. What does a HEPA filter offer?
HEPA filters use a cloth-like filter that is specifically engineered to trap at least 99.9% of particles, 0.3 microns or larger in size. In comparison, a smoke particle is 0.5 microns in size, nearly twice as large as the particles that HEPA purifiers are designed to catch. Because of this technique, HEPA filters can be extremely effective in clearing out almost anything from the air in a room--just shut the door and let it run. All filtration systems of this type have a replaceable filter that can last up to five years, depending on the environment being filtered. Although the noise level of a HEPA is greater than that of an ionic purifier, it can usually handle a wider variety of pollutants in the air.
4. Is there an advantage in purchasing an active carbon purifier?
Active carbon purifiers and filters use highly reactive carbon to chemically react to materials as they pass through the purifier. By pushing the air through the carbon, particulates are trapped and odors are bonded with the carbon to hold them within the filter making for a very effective process. Most activated carbon appliances use a HEPA filter as well to provide the top quality, clean air output.

Quiet and Clean
I just purchased this item yesterday to replace a six year old Ionic Pro that had finally given up the ghost. The previous Ionic Pro gave me excellent service and I am very impressed with this new Turbo model.
I am a heavy smoker who is disabled and I spend most of my time in one room. It took only a few hours after my original filter's death to know I had to replace it immediately. I turned on the new unit yesterday afternoon and in half hour the room was smelling fresh as a daisy.
My wife has allergies and we have tried the HEPA air filters with replaceable filters. The filters were quite expensive and never seemed to last very long. After a year or so, if the noisy fan doesn't go out, the stores stop stocking your filter and it doesn't matter because its cheaper to buy a whole new unit than replace the filter.
I like to run a filter in the bedroom as it helps my wife's allergies so I'll be purchasing another of these units to replace the old one in the bedroom. I'll definitely go with the Ionic Pro Turbo.
Don't count on the warranty or customer service
I have an Ionic Pro Turbo and it will not stay on for more than a couple of hours before it shuts itself off. It is 2 months old and should be under warranty. I have called 1-800-875-8577 and they ask me to call that same number back but select option 1 for "retail purchase". I tried numerous times but no answer. I emailed and they gave me another number 1-800-554-6051 and they too told me I had to call 1-800-875-8577 and select option 1. After much persistance, I have now reached a live person twice, but both times, they disconnected me after I explained my problem. There is no doubt that they have no intention of honoring their warranty and it is too late to return to the store. Beware this product! Every time I have talked to someone, it has obviously been a call center in India. As an added comment, the blue light is so bright that it is distracting in the bedroom. You'll have to cover it up.

Need An Air Freshener?
Need An Air Freshener?
An air freshener is a great tool to have. After all, who doesn't want a home that's clean and air that's clean to breath? There are many types of air fresheners on the market, but what you should be looking for isn't a type of freshener that will simply mask the smell of the air. Just because it smells like flowers or vanilla doesn't mean that the air that you are breathing in is actually clean! Yet, there are a number of different products that can help you to actually clean the air that you breathe in.
For one option, consider an air purifier. These units work in several different ways, but their ultimate goal is to clean out the toxins and pollutants that are lurking, undetectable in the air that you breathe. For that reason, look at these options.
Ozone purifiers also known as ionic air purifiers work by producing "ozone" which is released into the air. The ozone interacts with the air particles that it finds and neutralizes them, making them no longer harmful, smelly or even pollutants any longer. The other type of air purifier that provides air freshener benefits is that of a simple purifying unit that uses filtration. Here, air must circulate into the filter of the unit, go through these layers of filtration and then is pumped back out for you to breathe. Each of these options works differently, but each provides a better solution to you than breathing in air that is unhealthy and unclean.
Air freshener products that simply spray a perfume like substance into the air are definitely not worth your money. After all, they simply are not cleaning the air only hiding the odors that are a tell tale sign of something else lurking. Consider an alternative that will clean the air you breathe instead.

Information on UV Air Purifiers
Information on UV Air Purifiers
A whole range of manufacturers now produce air purifiers that use ultra violet (UV) light. These air purifiers target the many tiny microorganisms/ potential pathogens floating about in our household air, e.g. bacteria, spores and viruses.
A range of ailments can be attributed to these organisms such as respiratory allergies, sore throats, tuberculosis, legionnaire's disease and frequent common colds and the flu.
Those people who are at most risk from such airborne pollutants are the very young and the old, consequently it is these age groups that tend to benefit most from UV air purifiers.
UV light has an even shorter wavelength than pure violet light, being just off the visible spectrum UV it thus invisible to humans.
Three categories of UV exist:
380-315nm, known as UVA this was used in so-called 'backlights' during the 1970's
315-280nm, this is termed UVB
less than 280nm, this is called UVC and happens to be most effective at killing microorganisms
All three levels of UV have the capacity to damage people's eyes and promote skin cancer. UV has been seen to be very effective at killing microorganisms. This is achieved by the UV wavelength in use damaging the DNA of the organism, the energy contained breaking apart and misplacing the nucleotide bonds, as such lowering the chances of the organism's self repair or reproduction. Very small organisms like these have short lifespans and so purification results occur fast.
Two particular UV wavelengths have proved best at being absorbed by air bound microorganisms, and therefore killing them, 185nm and 265nm. Hence all good UV air purifiers need to utilize wavelengths similar to these.
To ensure that your UV air purifier works to its maximum pathogen killing capacity the date when a new bulb is introduced needs to be recorded. UVC does eventually stop being emitted, whilst the bulb its self continues for some time further and so can appear to still be functioning to the first-time user. The best place to record the date is typically using permanent marker on the underside of the purifier. Based on the manufacturer's recommendations you are then able to calculate the life of the bulbs and so know when replacements are required.
Air filtering systems should always be employed ahead of the UV lamps in the purifier to stop particles in the air (e.g. dust and pollen) landing on the lamps and shielding the emitted rays. The majority of UV air purification therefore works in tandem with HEPA and/ or activated carbon to begin with, UV being the final purification stage.
