Cigar Basics – Cigar Accessories And Culture

Cigar Basics - Cigar Accessories And Culture

Before discussing one of the intricacies of cigar smoking and the accessories needed such as the cigar cutter, let me first tackle the difference between cigarette smoking and cigar smoking. Majority of cigarette smokers puff away during break times, while driving or after eating; basically, cigarette smoking is a mere past time. Cigar smoking, on the other hand, is a culture. Cigars are often smoked during special occasions, like the birth of a first child, a business deal closing or a special night with the loved ones. Proof of the existence of the culture, is the circulation of magazines specifically dedicated to cigar smokers, like 'Cigar Afficionado'. These publications tackle topics such as brand reviews, international tobacconists and it also lists information on cigar-friendly restaurants.

Like any hobby with a cultural following, cigar smoking would not be complete or as enjoyable without the availability of accessories. There are many cigar accessories available such as cedar boxes for storing cigars, cigar humidors, cigar ashtrays and various cigar holders. However, perhaps the most important accessory in existence to allow a cigar smoker to truly enjoy a cigar is the cigar cutter. A quality cigar cutter is an absolute necessity if one truly wants to experience cigars the way the manufacturer intended.

There are many kinds of cigar cutters available in the market, and it can be quite confusing to those who are new to the whole experience. If it becomes overwhelming, I suggest that you choose a brand that has become established over the years for creating quality cigar cutters.

There are several kinds of cutters. They are:

10 Tips for the Cigar Novice

10 Tips for the Cigar Novice

Starting up a new hobby can be intimidating. Going golfing for the first time with a bunch of guys who have been doing it for years can make a beginner feel self-conscious about his lack of prowess on the links. People just learning to play guitar will go for years refusing to play in front of others. Even someone learning to cook might be embarrassed to share a less than savory meal with his family.

Some people might not consider smoking cigars a hobby, but it certainly is a pastime and it has its own intricacies just like anything else. There are traditions and faux pas when it comes to smoking cigars that any old puffer at the country club will notice and call you out on in a heartbeat.

Good-natured as the ribbing may be, it can't hurt to brush up on some cigar "do's and don'ts" before you have a cigar among the aficionados. Included are some suggestions for classy cigars and accessories that will show off your sense of refinement and good taste.

1. It is not a race. Smoking a cigar should be a leisure activity. The best way to start is to smoke as if it is no big deal. Take your time and enjoy it.

The Ashton Magnum is a smooth and creamy cigar that is perfect for new smokers. The aroma and flavor is remarkably consistent so you won't ever get a bad draw. Ashton Magnums are made from Dominican leaves and shade-grown Connecticut wrappers. It is truly a cigar to be savored.

2. Trim the end of your cigar with a cigar cutter. Don't try to bite it off with your teeth. This may look cool in the movies but it will just leave you with an unsightly and decidedly uncouth mouthful of tobacco.

The Double Blade Stainless Round Cigar Cutter from Orleans is an inexpensive yet fully functional cigar cutter. In other words, it is perfect for beginners. It works with a dual-blade guillotine action, which ensures a shred-free cut. It is housed in a durable stainless steel case for a long lifespan.

3. Don't grind out a cigar in an ashtray. Let it go out on its own. This is a handy technique for being able to re-light a cigar later on. It is also polite to not leave the smudged out remains of tobacco scattered around in an ashtray.

In your own home, it is also nice to have a relatively clean ashtray. The Flor De Gonzalez Ashtray is made of simple black porcelain with the company's logo in the center. It is square with resting places for your cigar in all four corners.

4. If there is less than a quarter left, let it go out in an ashtray. When a cigar starts to get that short, it will begin to lose its flavor. Nothing gold can stay. When it gets to the ¼ mark, it is time to let it go.

Another practical and stylish ashtray is the Hexagon Crystal Cigar Ashtray from Orleans. It looks incredibly luxurious for its modest price. It has wide stirrups (that's where the cigar rests) to accommodate bigger cigars and a deep bowl for plenty of ash.

5. Don't show off. Nothing screams amateur more than someone who makes a big deal out of smoking a cigar. Cigar holders and fancy smoking techniques are the antithesis of the cool guy casually smoking a cigar. You are allowed to blow smoke rings though. That's a cool trick that's not overtly flashy.

The best way to look natural smoking a cigar is to find one that you enjoy. In the beginning, it is best to start with a milder cigar and work your way up to fuller flavors. The Montecristo #1 is a legendary Cuban-inspired cigar that is made in the Dominican Republic.

6. Don't chew on it. You are not Peter Parker's grizzled boss at the newspaper. You are not a grunt in World War II. Unless you are being shot at or trying to ruin Spider-Man's good name, chewing on a cigar is just plain gross.

Fine cigars can be works of art and the Griffin's Robusto Natural is not something that you chomp away at. It has a rich and mild taste that smokers of every level can enjoy.

7. Don't ask for a light. Seriously, you are a cigar smoker now. You should be carrying your own lighter around. In the worst case scenario, ask the bartender for a pack of matches.

The refillable Xikar EX Windproof Flame Cigar Lighter is far more practical than it sounds. It looks good and is affordable without appearing cheap or flashy. It is a functional, fantastic lighter that gets your cigar lit. What else could you want?

8. Don't be afraid to let it go out and re-light it later. If you have spent some money on a nice cigar, there is no need to smoke it all at once and no need to waste it. Just scrape the ash off and rotate it over a flame for a moment to catch it again.

The Davidoff Millienium Churchill is a full-bodied, hearty, Dominican cigar that you won't want to let go to waste. These cigars are top-notch and have a complex blend of aromas and flavors. Don't be afraid to let it go out and enjoy the rest later.

9. Take your time warming up the end before you light it. This prevents you from charring the tobacco.

The Vector Vulcan Triple Flame shoots out a powerful trident flame that will allow you to perfectly light your cigar without over-toasting it.

10.  Don't smoke one after another. You are not chain smoking cigarettes here. Cigars are meant to be savored. Take your time and enjoy it. When it's done, it's done. Get on with your life for a while before having another.

If you find yourself enjoying your new pastime of smoking cigars, you are going to want to eventually invest in a humidor to keep them fresh. The Capri Humidor is a lovely, affordable way to keep your cigars tasting fresh for a long time.

Smoking cigars isn't like smoking cigarettes. It is a hobby, not a habit. It is the difference between enjoying a fine glass of wine and slamming whiskey before noon. Take to heart these tips and smoke in moderation and you will be on your way in no time.

Tips on Good Cigar Ashtrays

Tips on Good Cigar Ashtrays

Cigar smoking is a very popular pastime among many different people. Those who are just getting into cigar smoking will find that they need to have many different accessories to go along with their newfound hobby. Some of the most common accessories that you will find include a cigar lighter, a cigar cutter, a humidor, and a cigar holder than can aid when you are traveling. Something that not everyone puts a lot of thought into is the ashtray. Not all ashtrays are going to be suitable for cigars. For example, an ashtray made for cigarettes simply won't hold the larger and heavier cigars. You need to have something special, something that matches your unique style. How do you choose a good ashtray for cigars?

You will find many different materials when it comes to choosing an ashtray, and you will find even more styles and colors. Glass is one of the most popular materials for cigar ashtrays. You can find a variety of glass ashtrays that are large enough to accommodate your cigars, and you are sure to find a style that matches your smoking habits as well as the rest of your furnishings.

One of the most popular materials from which the ashtrays are made is glass. They are heavy and they come in many different styles and colors. Because they are heavy, you don't have to worry about tipping the ashtray over and making a mess. Some of the ashtrays also come with holders for your other accessories. Metal is another popular choice when it comes to ashtrays for cigars. Be sure that you get a metal ashtray that is heavy, as this will avoid tipping. Some of the small, light metal ashtrays won't be able to hold the weight of a large cigar. Also, make sure the bowl is deep enough to accommodate the cigar.

Ceramic is another great choice, and you can find them in many styles and colors. You will find that many of the ceramic ashtrays that can accommodate cigars are even a bit cheaper than those made of glass or metal are. For those on a budget, this might be the way to go.

You will be able to find the perfect ashtray to go along with all of your other accessories. Some ashtrays even have holders for some of your accessories. With all of the different options available, you will find that finding a great ashtray can be a fun process. You can look for ashtrays in many of the same places that you would for your other accessories, including humidors and cutters, as many shops will carry everything you need for your cigar smoking.

Cigar ashtrays ? a must have for cigar smokers

Cigar ashtrays ? a must have for cigar smokers

Ashtrays are not only a fancy accessory for the smokers who love to smoke cigar, it is a necessity for the cigar smokers. People who are habituated to smoking cigars or have developed this hobby of smoking cigars recently, both need a good cigar ashtray. A good cigar ashtray is designed in such a way that it takes care of the size of your cigar and your style of smoking and holding it.

Finding a good cigar ashtray may be just as easy as visiting your local market or antique store and picking up a cigar ashtray that suits you. These ashtrays suitable for cigars are designed such that they do not get dirty quickly by constant smoking down of cigars. This is important because cigars are less flexible than cigarettes and are difficult to manipulate after getting pushed into the ashtrays.

Also, it is also important for a cigar ashtray to be able to hold the cigar properly without letting it fall over. Cigars being longer and bigger in size need to be rested more number of times than cigarettes. The depth of a cigar ashtray should also be such that the cigars can be set off completely after they are smoked down into the ashtrays. This is why, depth and width of an ashtray both are important parameters while picking an ashtray for your cigar smoking needs. Also, the ashtrays should have its edges curved such that various shapes and sizes of cigars can rest on them without rolling off the edges.

Finding a good ashtray for your cigars does not require any special skill, but can actually avoid the annoying instances of struggling to rest your cigars on the ashtrays or seeing your cigars still burn when you had already pushed them down into the ashtrays. Needless to say, having a beautiful and useful ashtray enhances the beauty of the desk or table along with being useful for your regular cigar smoking habits.

Buying a Marble Cigar Ashtray

Buying a Marble Cigar Ashtray

If you're looking for an astray online you should have no problem finding the right ashtray for you in a very short period of time. I needed a new cigar ashtray not long ago for my home office. I wanted something that had an expensive look and feel to it, but I didn't want it to actually be expensive. Anyhow, I thought a nice marble cigar ashtray would be a nice addition to my home office. Especially if I could find this marble cigar ashtray in a dark color, preferably black. I thought I would check online first to see what kind of prices I could expect to pay for a nice marble cigar ash tray.

I jumped on my favorite search engine, Yahoo.com, and typed in my search term "black marble cigar ashtray" and waited for the results. I received over 300,000 results for the keyword phrase black marble cigar ashtray. Needless to say it took some digging to find exactly what I wanted, but when I saw it I knew instantly that this was the right cigar ashtray for my home office.

I landed on the website ashtraysearch.com and started browsing their cigar ashtrays when I found this amazing black marble square ashtray that almost jumped off the page at me. Made of solid black marble, this cigar ashtray is an impressive 1¼ thick. At the current time the marble cigar ashtray is going for .99 so it seemed like a really good deal. I jumped on it and ordered one for the office off the ashtraysearch.com website which sells Amazon.com products. Actually, I ordered two of them since my brothers birthday is right around the corner and he also smokes cigars. For less than a hundred bucks I had two brand new black marble square ashtrays including the shipping costs!

A few days later I received a package in the mail from Amazon.com. I knew exactly what it was as I hadn't ordered anything online other than the ashtrays lately. I promptly ripped the box open to check out my new cigar ashtrays. I then took the marble ashtrays out of the box to inspect for any damages as sometimes packages do get damaged in transit. Luckily both of my marble cigar ashtrays were in perfect condition with no problems. I immediately took the ashtray to its final resting place on the corner of my desk.

In the end, finding a marble cigar ashtray for my office was a snap. The world wide web really makes life easy for us lazy people that like to shop online. Thanks to ashtraysearch.com I was easily able to find an ashtray that fit my needs and budget.

Larry Haywood operates ashtraysearch.com which is dedicated to being the webs premier ashtray portal. Browse all types of ashtrays or read our ashtray reviews.

Ash-free Floor with Ashtrays

As a smoker it is just impossible not to leave bits of ashes on the floor. Do not be used to this habit, or else you will end up living with ash waxed floor and an ash-fog environment! Before things get out of hand get yourself an ashtray.

Fed up of not having a nice ash tray around the house? Can't find any ashtrays in your local shops? Well join the crowd then! Is it political madness since the smoking ban I wonder? (I live in the UK) - I just can't seem to be able to find any in my local shops or supermarkets, what's going on? Well I exert my freedom to have a nice ash tray for my own personal use in my own home/garden. I'm sure if you are a dedicated smoker like myself then you feel the same.

I share a house with 4 other people, and they are messy guys, I assure you! I'm just fed up with it. What do I mean by that? Well, 4 of the people in my house smoke, and not one of them has a decent ashtray. Cans and cups have become ashtrays and the garden has become the cigarette butt graveyard. At least the soil quality might improve from all the ash!

So that's it - I'm on a mission to find nice ashtrays.

I started having a look on the internet and there IS quite a good selection out there. I think I'm sold, the next chance I have I'm going to order a whole collection of them. I was quite surprised to find out how many different categories there were. If you didn't know - there are smokeless ashtrays, outdoor ashtrays, pocket ashtrays, cigar ashtrays, and your regular indoor ashtrays. I think I'm going to order 1 from each category - that should soon sort out my little problem.

So, if you, like me are on a mission to sort out your cigarette ash problem then the internet is a great resource for a solution.

Let's raise a smoke in one hand to the ashtray industry!

Smoking – Dangerous for your Heart

Shashi Agarwal MD asked:

"Smoking kills. If you're killed, you've lost a very important part of your life."

Brooke Shields (American actress)

Cigarette smoking is the number one preventable cause of premature deaths in the United States. In the year 2000, it is estimated that 8.6 million Americans had 12.7 million medical conditions that were caused by cigarette smoking. For current smokers, the most prevalent were chronic bronchitis (49%), followed by emphysema (24%). For former smokers, the three most prevalent conditions were chronic bronchitis (26%), emphysema (24%), and previous heart attack (24%). Lung cancer accounted for 1% of all cigarette smoking-attributable illnesses Each year in the United States, approximately 440,000 persons die of a cigarette smoking-attributable illness. This results in 5.6 million years of potential life lost, $75 billion in direct medical costs, and $82 billion in lost productivity.. Smoking is responsible for 30% of all coronary heart disease deaths. Smoking however remains very prevalent, with almost 21 million men and 18 million women continue to smoke. The sad part is that a significant percentage of children continue to take up smoking each year.

"I smoke ten to fifteen cigars a day. At my age I have to hold on to something." George F. Burns (American comedian 1896-1996). Geoge Burns may have been genetically blessed or just plain lucky. Most people who smoke will see the risk of dying from heart disease go up by almost three times. The risk of stroke will double. Smoking increases blood pressure, accelerates the progression of arteriosclerosis, decreases the good HDL cholesterol, and increases the tendency for the blood to clot. Even after heart bypass surgery, continuing smoking increases the risk of recurrent cardiovascular events. Smokers also suffer from more peripheral arterial disease and aneurysms. Women who smoke and use oral contraceptives increase their risk of heart attack ten fold and increase their risk of strokes and blood clots in the legs

Second hand or passive smoke is also associated with health risks in both children and adults. This environmental tobacco smoke contains a complex mixture of over 4000 chemicals, many toxic and about 40 proven to cause cancer in humans. The EPA estimates that environmental tobaccos smoke causes approximately 3,000 lung cancer and about 37,000 coronary heart disease deaths in nonsmokers each year. Children, exposed to secondhand smoke before and after birth, are at a greater risk of developing high blood pressure, cleft pallets and lips, childhood leukemia, attention deficit disorder and childhood wheezing. Besides Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), second hand smoke is also associated with an increase in acute lower respiratory tract infections, asthma, chronic respiratory symptoms and middle ear infections in children. Adults experience an increased risk of lung cancer, nasal sinus cancer, heart disease mortality, acute and chronic coronary heart disease morbidity and eye and nasal irritation, when exposed to second hand smoke. It also greatly increases the risk of developing metabolic syndrome, both in children and adults. No wonder Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels noted, "Every citizen who stops smoking, or loses a few pounds, or starts managing his chronic disease with real diligence, is caulking a crack for the benefit of us all. "

"Smoking is related to practically every terrible thing that can happen to you. " Actress Loni Anderson. Smoking does not just damage the cardiovascular system. It can make men infertile and reduce their potency. It causes chronic lung disease like bronchitis and emphysema, and also the irritating chronic cough and increased phlegm production. It increases susceptibility to the flu and increases wrinkling. It has been linked to hearing loss, cataracts, rheumatoid arthritis and many cancers. Pregnant women who smoke face the danger of spontaneous abortion, still birth and sudden infant death syndrome after childbirth.

If you stop smoking, the benefits start almost immediately. The body begins to repair itself almost immediately. Several clinical studies have shown the cessation of smoking results in a substantial decrease in recurrent heart attacks, sudden cardiac death, total coronary heart disease mortality, and ischemic stroke. People who quit smoking cut their risk of abdominal aortic aneurysm in half. Within a few days or weeks, exercise endurance and cardiovascular capacity improve, and the good high density lipoprotein cholesterol increases. Within a year, the risk for most cardiovascular diseases will be cut in half. Within 5 to 15 years after stopping smoking, the risk of having a stroke decreases to the same level as that of someone who never smoked. After 15 smoke free years, the cardiovascular system will be as healthy as of somebody who had never smoked. And the incidence of all smoking related cancers--of the mouth, larynx, esophagus, bladder, kidney and pancreas--decreases.

"The best way to stop smoking is to just stop - no ifs, ands or butts. "Groucho Marx (American Comedian, Actor and Singer, 1890-1977). Once you are ready to quit smoking, set a quit date. Inform and gather support from friends and relatives. Change your environment that encourages you to smoke. Get rid of all cigarettes and ashtrays in your home, car, and place of work. Do not let people smoke around you or in your home. Learn new skills and behavior and distract yourself from the urge to smoke. Drink lots of water and other fluids. You may also want to join a smoking support group. If you feel like the actress Loni Anderson, who unfortunately experienced, "Once you are hooked, smoking is harder to quit then heroin, " then you may want to seek professional help. There are several prescription and non-prescription medicines available. Nicotine replacement therapy is available as nicotine patch, gum, nasal spray or inhaler. Non-nicotine therapy includes prescription drugs Zyban and Chantix. Four out of five people who quit smoking may gain an average of about five pounds in weight. The good news is that this usually goes away within a few weeks or months after quitting.

Smokeless tobacco should not be used as an alternative to cigarettes. It is highly addictive and often more difficult to give up. This is because of its high nicotine content. Using smokeless tobacco also increases the risk of high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease and stroke.

So quit today. You will not only look younger but smell better. You will also live a better and longer life. And save a lot of money. It has also been said that cancer cures smoking. Perhaps I can add that premature death will definitely cure your smoking. So do not be like Mark Twain (American Humorist, Writer and Lecturer. 1835-1910) "It's easy to quit smoking. I've done it hundreds of times." Quit once and quit forever.
